The Community Archiving Workshop is a one-day workshop that centers community building and the preservation of audiovisual collections. It will bring together archivists and community volunteers to support the preservation of the audiovisual collection of the Vietnamese Heritage Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of Vietnamese refugees’ heritage. The Vietnamese Heritage Museum collects and shares the testimonies and artifacts that tell the stories of the Vietnamese refugees and preserves this heritage for present and future generations to reflect upon. The workshop is hosted by CSU Fullerton University Archives & Special Collections and will take place at the Pollak Library.

The workshop begins with educational presentations addressing the identification of audiovisual formats and their risk factors. Participants will then break into groups and work together to inspect and inventory the collection. There will also be demonstrations of film inspection and audio and video digitization. Through the workshop, the collection partner, host site, and other day-of participants will learn to identify different audiovisual formats and their risk factors, establish controlled vocabulary for description of collections, and document and prioritize collections for preservation. Workshop participants will be handling film (8mm and 16mm), compact audio cassettes, VHS tapes, 2″ Quad videotape, floppy discs, and optical media.
