Those that work with archival materials often have strong scholarly backgrounds and extensive technical training. Yet academic programs, technical expertise, and experiential education often don’t allow time for training dedicated to financial management. Designed for staff and volunteers of all abilities and organizations of all sizes, this webinar provides an introduction to basic financial principles, concentrated on the topics of most relevance to those stewarding collections and archival projects. From understanding basic elements of the budget to learning ways that financial metrics can support funding requests and set expectations with corporate or academic parent organizations, this webinar offers fundamental tools to benefit any archivist, revised to address post-pandemic issues and themes.

This expanded, four-hour session will provide students with the foundation to understand basic financial systems, set priorities related to planning and reporting, and learn successful strategies for effective communications with internal and external stakeholders, institutional partners, and supervising/governing bodies.

Registrants for this webinar will receive access to sample templates and documents, review relevant and timely readings, and contribute to dynamic discussions regarding their own institutions in the context of the broader archival field.

Upon completing the course, you will be able to:

  • Comprehend financial processes and systems including budget structures, the annual audit process, and stewardship activities.
  • Leverage knowledge of financial systems to establish productive communications with stakeholders/institutional partners, funders, and corporate, academic, and/or governing bodies.
  • Synthesize financial metrics for success with those related to mission orientation, resource management, and operational capacity.
  • Discern between internal and external reporting needs for planning purposes related to grant reporting, institutional and strategic planning, and individual performance.
