Course will run across three days---October 22-24, 2024 (2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. U.S. central time, each day).

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to initiate and carry out reappraisal and deaccessioning programs and projects step-by-step through learning how to apply the Guidelines for Reappraisal and Deaccessioning to unique situations. You’ll have an opportunity to assess what your repository needs to do before beginning a reappraisal and deaccessioning project or program. You’ll hear about basic concepts of reappraisal and deaccessioning, including collecting data, making decisions, the options for removing collections from your holdings, etc. You’ll also delve into larger issues of determining ownership, considering choices, and making responsible and ethical decisions. This workshop involves discussion of case studies provided by the instructor and opportunities to discuss participants’ own situations and scenarios.

Upon completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Take steps to reappraise and deaccession archival materials in an ethical, responsible, and transparent manner
  • Apply the Guidelines for Reappraisal and Deaccessioning to your specific situation
  • Advocate and explain to your administrators, superiors, and parent bodies the benefits of reappraisal and deaccessioning
