This course provides a high-level overview of the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model. This required foundational course serves as a “basic building block” that lays the groundwork for your DAS course of study. In three learning modules, this course takes you through the history of OAIS, provides definitions of key terms, explains some of the important concepts associated with the international (version 2) standard, as well as discusses current uses of the conceptual framework.

Note that this course utilizes version 2 of the OAIS Reference Model.

*This course is a requirement of the Digital Archives Specialist Certificate Program.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the history, definition, and significance of the OAIS reference model
  • Understand common terminology and conceptual models associated with OAIS
  • Understand how to create and manage information packages within OAIS-informed workflows
