The Community Archiving Workshop is a one-day workshop that centers community building and the preservation of audiovisual collections. It brings together archivists and community volunteers to support the inspection and inventory of the audiovisual collection of a local organization.

The participating organization will bring to the workshop unprocessed collections of audiovisual materials. The workshop begins with educational presentations about how to identify different audiovisual formats and their risk factors. Workshop participants then break into small groups and inspect, label, and inventory items. Participants will also have an opportunity to practice film inspection and learn about audio and video digitization.

The primary outcome is to train workshop participants on the handling and care of audiovisual collections, to engage local community members in processing and describing their community’s audiovisual assets, and to process a small collection of recordings in preparation for preservation. Participants find the workshop enriching, valuing the hands-on aspect it adds to their conference experience. Last year’s workshop in partnership with the Vietnamese Heritage Museum had 60 participants and processed 341 items.

This year’s workshop will focus on leadership development using the Training of Trainers (TOT) model. CAW trainers and trainees will work together with a partner organization in the New Orleans area to design a workshop that suits the collection and the needs of the organization. Workshop attendees will gain experience in working with and training non-archivists to care for their collections. In the process, they will engage in hands-on processing, inspecting, and cataloging audiovisual media. Most importantly, they will build relationships and connections with the New Orleans community.
